Akoy Agau is a 6’8” strong & skilled Forward entering his second professional season. Akoy spent his rookie season playing for Libertadores de Queretaro in The National Professional Basketball League (LNBP) in Mexico.
While playing for Libertadores, Akoy filled the stat sheet, averaging 9.6 points per game & 5.1 rebounds per game while shooting an impressive 57.5% from the field & 81.5% from the free throw line. Akoy has a unique combination of strength & athleticism that shows on both sides of the court, but most noticeably on the offensive end. Akoy is a threat from both the inside and the outside, is an effective screener, active offensive rebounder & a great finisher as a rim runner in transition.
Akoy spent time playing collegiately at the University of Louisville, Georgetown University & Southern Methodist University, ultimately graduating from Louisville in 2019. Akoy was a solid role player at each school & has continued that through his first professional season. While in college, Akoy shot an efficient 49.3% from the field, 74% from the free throw line & averaged 1+ offensive rebounds per game in two seasons. His best season came at Georgetown when he shot 50.6% from the field, 85.1% from the free throw line & 4.25 rebounds per game, including 1.06 offensive rebounds per game. Akoy was part of the 2014 Louisville team that won both the American Athletic Conference Regular Season & Tournament Championships before going to the Sweet 16 in the NCAA Tournament.
Akoy was born in Khartoum, the capital of Sudan to Madut Agau & Adaw Makeir. Akoy is the oldest of six children (Magay, Aguir, Achol, Atong, Akol, Achan). Akoy was born during the Second Sudanese Civil War and when he was seven years old, he and his parents moved to Egypt where he would stay until he was ten years old before relocating to Omaha, Nebraska.
Akoy, who can speak three languages (Dinka, Arabic and English), went to Omaha Central High School. While at Omaha Central, Akoy won four straight Nebraska Class A state championships, averaging 12.8 points, 6.1 rebounds and blocked 81 shots as a senior. Akoy was a three time all-state selection and was the first Nebraska Class A Player to start for four state title teams. He also played tight end and defensive end at Omaha Central and participated in the high jump, triple jump and long jump in track & field. Out of Omaha Central, Akoy was a consensus Top 100 Player, ranked as high as 75 by ESPN.
While at Georgetown, Akoy participated as a member of a Big East Conference Student-Athletes Advisory Committee. Akoy received his Bachelor’s Degree in English from Georgetown (‘18) and received his Master’s in Business Administration (MBA) Degree in Business Administration from the University of Louisville (‘19).
