Tony Hicks is a fourth year combo guard out of South Holland, Illinois. Tony is currently playing with the Surrey Scorchers in the British Basketball League (BBL), the top division in the United Kingdom. This is Tony’s second stint with Surrey, having played his rookie season with the club in 2017-2018.

 

During his rookie season, Tony averaged almost 20 points per game to go along with 4 rebounds and 6 assists per game. Tony was awarded with British BBL Player of the Week during Round 26 in the 2017-2018 season, which saw him score 33 points along with 11 assists and a 34 rank in a big 96-94 win against Manchester. Tony played the two seasons in between his stints with Surrey playing with the Rostock Seawolves of the German ProA League, the top division in Germany. Tony averaged double figures in scoring in each of his two years with Rostock, playing a combined 52 games between the two seasons. Tony was named the German ProA Player of the Week two times during the 2018-19 season and was also named to the Eurobasket.com All-German Pro A Honorable Mention.

 

Tony attended and played for the University of Pennsylvania during his first three seasons in college, all of which he averaged double figure scoring and was one of the more efficient scorers in the league. Tony was named All-Ivy League Honorable Mention in both 2013 and 2015. He totaled 1,060 career points while starting 64 games in three seasons with the Quakers. He made 107 total three-pointers and was a career 78.1% free throw shooter. In his final season, Hicks led Penn in scoring (13.2), was second in assists (65) and three pointers (43), and was third in steals (22). He was a team captain and ranked sixth in the Ivy League in Scoring. He matched a Penn single-game record for assists with 13 against Lafayette.

 

After his Junior year, Tony transferred to the University of Louisville. Due to NCAA Transfer Rules, Tony sat out the 2015-2016 season while preparing for his graduate transfer year with the Cardinals. Playing 23 games, Tony was a key member of the team that was eventually Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) Regular Season Co-Runner-Up. 

Tony Hicks was born and raised in South Holland, Illinois, which is just outside of Chicago. He is the son of Yvette Render and Terence Harrington. He is a brother, Raushawn Render, who ran track at Eastern Illinois University. Tony attended St. Rita of the Chicago Catholic League in Chicago. As a senior in 2012, Tony was a member of the 2012 Parade All-America team, Chicago Catholic League Player of the Year and an all state selection. He led St. Rita to the Chicago Catholic League North Division Championship while averaging 23.7 points per game. Hicks was honored as the ESPN Illinois Player of the Year and was a Chicago Sun-Times All-Area selection as a senior.

 

Tony graduated from the University of Pennsylvania with a bachelor’s degree in Sociology and earned his master’s degree in Human Resources at the University of Louisville in 2017.
